I know how it feels to be married — and still feel lonely

Just a few years after we said "I do," my marriage was failing. We fought constantly. I cried myself to sleep at night.

I did what you're supposed to do. I read the marriage books. I told him what I needed. I got him to go to counseling. Then the counselor said I'd be better off without him.

Sitting on that gray couch, I didn't see any choice but to end my painful marriage.

But I was too embarrassed to get divorced.

As a last-ditch effort, I asked women who'd been happily married for 15+ years: What's your secret? What they told me sounded crazy. But I was desperate — so I decided to try anyway.

One day I came home, and his face lit up. That had been gone for so long.  

I had so much more power to change things than I ever realized.  When I shared what I was learning with other women, they reported miracles too.

What I didn't expect was how much it mattered to practice these skills alongside each other. Hearing their stories, laughing together, trying things out in real time — that's where the breakthrough actually happened.

That's how I've kept our marriage shiny and amazing — for 37 years now.
